It’s easy for Windows user to locate the sound record application on their computer or laptop because you can simply type it on the search box, and it’ll pop up. But if you’re a Mac user- and let’s face it, Mac can get a little tricky sometimes- you might end up wondering if there is such an application already incorporated on your device or if you have to manually download it to your computer which begs the question: what are the options for sound recording on your Mac OS?
So how do you record sound from a Mac
The QuickTime 10 Player on your Mac has its own audio recording if you’re using the OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard or newer software on your Mac. If Windows have Sound Recorder, then this is Mac’s version of the application. Locating is fairly easy. Here are the following steps to follow:
- From the Applications folder of your Mac, open the QuickTime Player.
- Click on New Audio Recording when you open the File menu.
- A window associated to the File menu will pop up for you.
- Click the down button or arrow beside the button that’s meant for recording, you may choose between sound input and the settings that are meant for the quality of your sound.
- You can adjust the volume of your microphone by using the slider. The slider is located beneath the button meant for recording.
If you have an older version of Mac, then you will come across two sources in this application. You’ll have the build-in microphone and the line-in that comes from the jack. But if you have the latest version of Mac or if yours is fairly new, then there’s only one microphone that’s available to be used as the source meant for your audio.
M4A files is recorded under the high-quality setting and it comes with variable bits per second that uses the AAC code and this makes up for a good balance between file size and compatibility and the quality. For AIFC files, it’s saved under maximum quality settings and uses PCM S24 codes and with it, larger files can be produced but there’s an issue with file compatibility because it tends to be limited. To be safe and if you’re unsure which of them to use, the high setting will be a better option.
Note: Keep in mind that the QuickTIme 7 version is mostly the version that’s in early Mac OS X. But the audio recording for this version is a feature that was already paid from the QuickTime Pro.
Audacity: Free recording and editing software.
DOWNLOAD AUDACITY
If you’re wondering if there’s a software available that can both record and edit sound, then you’re in luck because for power users, Audacity is a free application that you can install to your device. It’s considered as an amazing and powerful editor, recorder and converter and there’s even a version that’s compatible with Macs that run an older version of the Mac OS X software. It’s a bit harder to maneuver compared to QuickTime feature that’s meant to record sound or audio but it’s a better option especially if you want to edit the recording that you’re making and it’s able to record longer recordings without limitations.
