Organize your sound effects in iMovie 3

OSXFAQ Reader Tip By James Alguire

It is possible to organize your sound effects in iMovie 3, including adding your own sound effects listing in the iMovie Sound Effects menu with some limitations.

Here is how you do it

1. Go to the applications folder and locate iMovie 3.

2. Control-click (or right-click if you have a 2 or 3-button mouse) on the iMovie 3 icon and select Show Package Contents.

3. Double-click on the Contents folder, then double-click on the Resources folder.

4. Locate the Sound Effects folder and double-click to open it. In the Sound Effects folder you will see the Skywalker Sound Effects and Standard Sound Effects folders.

5. Create a new folder (File>New Folder or Command-Shift-N) Name the folder The iMovie Sound Effects

6. Move any sound effects that you want into the folder.

7. Close the window and launch iMovie 3

8. Click on the Audio button and select iMovie Sound Effects from the pull-down window. If you scroll down you will see the name of the folder you created as a new listing with the associated sound effects.

Some notes. Any folder I tried to create that started with a word that came before Skywalker alphabetically the folder name did not appear as a separate listing in the Sound Effects Menu, but the sound effects did appear. If I created several folders alphabetically before Skywalker, none of the folders showed up as a listing but the sound effects did.

I could create two additional folders that followed Standard Sound Effects alphabetically (like The Sound Effects or Wild Sound Effects) and both the folder names would show as separate listings with any sound effects placed in them. However any additional folders I created did not show up as separate listings and the sound effects they contained showed up under the last listing. Interesting.

Enjoy :-)
