Casio Exilim EX-S100 This Weeks Guest - Hour 2Larry O'Connor - CEO - Other World Computing
Larry O'Connor, 29, is the founder, president and chief executive officer of Illinois-based, Other World Computing (OWC). The company is a leading provider of quality computer upgrade products and services for Macintosh users around the world - primarily through www.macsales.com, one of the most popular Macintosh e-commerce sites on the Web. O'Connor's entrepreneurial interests were kindled at an early age through various direct selling endeavors and his efforts to reprogram an accounting application for his father's company at the age of eight. At age 14, O'Connor began re-inking computer ribbons in the garage of his family's home in Woodstock, Ill. He offered the service through word-of-mouth advertising and small self-promotional activities to local businesses as a cost-saving alternative to buying new printer ribbons. This was the beginning of what would become OWC, a multi-million dollar business. The following year, O'Connor had an opportunity to resell computer memory. To capitalize on this opportunity, O'Connor turned to the Internet. As a result, his company became one of the first to use AOL's Mall Classifieds, as well as online chat rooms, to promote itself and its products. Using a phone, a computer, and a UPS shipping account, O'Connor quickly grew his printer-ribbon refurbishing and memory-resale venture into a thriving computer products and services business, and in 1994, OWC reached $1 million in annual sales. Since its inception, OWC has evaluated and added thousands of consumer electronics and computer hardware products to its inventory, all of which are warehoused in and shipped from a 10,000-square-foot facility in Woodstock. OWC offers its own line of Macintosh upgrade products, which was launched in the mid-1990s. Sold under the brand name OWC Mercury', the product line includes accelerators, FireWire storage solutions, and external enclosure kits for FireWire components, among other hardware products. In 2001, O'Connor introduced a line of leather carrying cases and accessories for portable electronics, including Apple's iPod MP3 player and notebook computers. OWC also introduced the Laptop Screen Protector, which protects laptop monitors from damage and marks while laptops are closed. In addition to his thriving retail business, O'Connor launched OWC.net in 1997. OWC.net is an independent Internet service provider (ISP) offering traditional dial-up and DSL broadband Internet access, as well as satellite connectivity, hosting, Web site and graphic design services. In Spring 2002, OWC.net became the only ISP in the greater Chicago area to offer the latest V.92 dial-up technology. And in early 2003, OWC launched FasterMac.net, a national Internet Service Provider designed specifically for Macintosh users. During the past 15 years, O'Connor has seen OWC grow into a profitable company with more than 50 employees, industry-recognized hardware and software products, and annual sales of more than $22 million in 2003. O'Connor is also co-founder of Price.com, which has provided consumers with online comparative pricing information for computer and electronic products since 1998. Other World Computing has remained loyal to its roots in Woodstock since its early days in O'Connor's home up to its present location, where the company handles warehousing and order processing for several thousand unique products. Those products include OWC's own line of hardware products sold under the MercuryTM and Neptune' brands. The company currently employs more than 50 full-time people, and to this day, O'Connor remains the company's chairman, president and chief executive officer. OWC currently operates a popular online e-commerce store specializing in Macintosh upgrade and expansion products, provides nationwide dial-up and DSL Internet services and has also developed a complete line of Macintosh hardware products.
With its focus on Macintosh products and services, the company supports loyal brand users and receives purchase requests and support queries from across various industries and from around the world. Following is a breakdown of OWC's target markets:
