Inside Mac - July 24th 2004

This Weeks Guests

Christopher Breen - Macworld Magazine

Christopher Breen has been writing about the Macintosh since the latter days of the Reagan Administration for such publications as MacUser, MacWEEK, and Macworld.

As a contributing editor for MacUser he co-wrote the magazine's popular Help Folder column with Bob LeVitus. As a Macworld contributing editor he first penned the magazine's Game Room column and, later, Macworld's tips and troubleshooting column, Mac 911. He also answers questions and offers tips in the Mac 911 section of Macworld's weekly newsletter http://www.macworld.com/newsletters

He's the co-author of two books -- The Macintosh Bible Guide to Games (with Bart Farkas) and My iMac (with Andy Gore and Jill Baird) -- and has contributed to numerous editions of Peachpit Press' Macintosh Bible. He's the sole author of Peachpit Press' Mac 911 and Secrets of the iPod (Second Edition).

He appears in video form in Breen's Bungalow, a QuickTime tutorial found on the CD bundled with newsstand copies of Macworld.

Prior to becoming a technology journalist, Christopher spent a number of years seated on a piano bench, making his living as a professional musician in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Breen lives with his wife, child, two cats, half-dozen Macs, and barely tolerable broadband-satellite connection in the foothills of the Santa Cruz mountains.

Tim Warner - Editor - Macworld Magazine Resource CD

Tim Warner has worked with Macworld for thirteen years, starting right after college as a member of Macworld Lab. He specialized in hardware testing, specializing in high-end monitors, hard drives, and optical storage. He also tested optical character recognition software and drive diagnostic software. During his seven years as part of the full-time staff, he wrote several features, did a brief stint as a columnist, and wrote a slew of reviews, including the first Power Computing Mac clone and the first Radius 68040 accelerator.

In 1995, life circumstances took Tim to the East Coast and away from the Macintosh world. It was the dark ages of Mac between Sculley and Jobs' return and so Tim violated his oath of allegiance and became a Windows expert, helping lead a team of software developers, and heading up documentation and customer relations for a mid-cap insurance company in Philadelphia. It was here that he started to really figure out what average folks in the field want from computers and to realize how many people have to deal with thoughtlessly conceived and poorly designed products as a regular part of business computing. So when Tim returned to the West Coast three years later, he dived into bridging the gap between technologists and consumers, writing and designing tools to help end-users be more effective.

Since 1999, Tim has been carrying out that mission with the Macworld CD, providing information, resources, tips, and tools to readers. The CD appears every month with newsstand issues of the magazine in North America, as well as in a virtual version available over the Internet. Subscribers and newsstand readers alike can access the online version by finding the web address on the Table of Contents page in the current issue. Macworld archives six months of CDs online, including previous editions of Christopher Breen's video column, Breen's Bungalow, and Inside Mac Radio shows, including hours of bonus content.

Tim is also a partner with Gigantic Idea Studio, a social marketing firm based in the SF/Bay Area. Gigantic Idea Studio focuses on helping clients deliver effective messages to the public about social issues, such as a healthier environment, economic sustainability, and creative strategies.
