PETER MAX

With paintings on exhibition in hundreds of museums and galleries worldwide, Peter Max and his vibrant colors have become part of the fabric of contemporary culture. Max has been successively called a Pop Icon, Neo Fauvist, Abstract Expressionist and the United State's "Painter Laureate."

Peter has painted portraits for the last six Presidents, the Dalai Lama, and innumerable music and film stars, including John Lennon, Elton John, David Bowie, Steven Tyler, Britany Spears, Michael Douglas, Aretha Franklin, Elvis Presley, Paul McCartney, Kristin Scott Thomas, Mick Jagger, Sting, Guns 'N Roses, and most recently the 5 time Grammy winner, Norah Jones, among others. He is a generous philanthropist, contributing more than 1200 works of art a year to animal rights, human rights, women's rights, children's issues, the environment and peace groups. His main cause right now is animal rights.

Max has a long standing history in the music arena. He was the Official Artist for this year's 45th Grammy Awards in NY, marking his sixth time. His artwork was unveiled at the recent press conference for the Grammy nominations. During the last several decades, Max's style has become synonymous with pop culture and the music world. Max was asked to paint the MTV logo in MTV's early years. He currently holds the record for creating the largest mural for a concert stage - he was asked to create the 600 foot mural for the stage of Woodstock '99, which he did using images from his signature late 60's cosmic period. Max was also asked to create a 500 foot mural for the stage at Moscow Stadium in Russia where Ozzy Osbourne, Motley Cruee and Cinderella performed. His artwork has graced more than 250 magazine covers, including two for Time (with paintings of Paul McCartney and Prince Charles), Newsweek, People, TV Guide and Life Magazine. Life Magazine featured Max himself, with an 8-page cover story on his life. His last project was an installation of 45 portraits of Bono for the MusiCares Person of the Year Tribute this past February. The installation was on stage during the tribute and served as the background for the evening's speech by President Clinton and performances of U2 songs by Garbage, No Doubt, Norah Jones, BB King, Mary J. Blige, Sheryl Crow, Elvis Costello, and U2.

While Peter Max might be best know for illuminating the sixties with vibrant color, Peter has also been one the most active sports artists of the past half century. From the Super Bowl to the World's Cup, there are few sporting events that Peter Max hasn't immortalized. Peter has been the Official Artist of 5 Super Bowls, The Subway World Series, The U.S. Open, The World Cup USA, The America's Cup, The New York City Marathon, The Kentucky Derby, The NHL All-Star Game, The Tour De France and this year's Indianapolis 500. In addition Peter has Maxised thousands of the sporting world's most recognizable objects. Peter has loaned his unmistakable style to NASCAR ledged Dale Earnhardt's #3 Car, basketballs signed by Michael Jordan, NHL Goalie Masks including that of NY Ranger Goalie Mick Richter and many more. Peter has also been commissioned to paint the portraits of the biggest names in the sports, including Michael Jordan, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, The 1983 World Champion Philadelphia 76ers and Mohamed Ali to name a small few.

With paintings on exhibit in museums and galleries worldwide, Peter Max, America's Painter Laureate, is one of the preeminent pop artists in America. World famous since he started painting in the 60's, Peter even painted a Continental Airlines Boeing 777 that is currently in commercial use. He is one of the most prevalent pop culture artists of our time.

Max has achieved his place in history having painted for various Heads of State, including six U.S. Presidents. From art that appeared on the first U.S. 10-cent stamp bearing the title "Preserve the Environment," to 235 U.S. Border murals greeting millions of people entering America each year, Peter Max seeks to capture themes of America at its finest in his art.

Max has a long-standing career as the preeminent Pop artist in America. His art appears on a Boeing 777 jumbo jet currently flying the skies for Continental; a 600-foot stage for the Woodstock Music Festival; the covers of Verizon's New York City yellow and white pages; and a giant mural unveiled at the 2002 Winter Olympics. Max has also been designated Official Artist of five Super Bowls, six Grammy Awards, World Cup USA, The World Series, the United Nations Earth Summit, and numerous other events. Max was recently honored at the Jefferson Awards with an award for his lifetime dedication to America, and its charitable causes. While in Washington DC, Max also presented the award he designed for the 30th Jefferson Awards ceremony to our First Lady Laura Bush.

Max's concerns for peace, the environment, human rights and animal rights, are as strong today as they have been throughout the years, often becoming the themes for his paintings. Max recently rescued a cow that jumped over a 6-foot fence to escape slaughter in Cincinnati. He has adopted the cow that he calls Cindy Woo, and has arranged for her to live happily ever after at the Farm Sanctuary in Watkins Glen, NY.

Deeply affected by the events and aftermath of September 11th, Max like many of us wanted to respond. The artist created posters to benefit the September 11th Fund, the Twin Towers Fund and The Survivors Fund. The Patriotic Posters with proceeds benefiting the September 11th Fund, The Twin Towers Fund and the Survivors Fund are available on Max's web-site http://www.petermax.com.

Last year Max was asked to create the American Heroes project, a creation of 356 portraits of the fire fighters lost on 9-11 and in that year. "What began as my artistic response to the tragedy and the need to create one portrait for each fire fighter's family, became something we can now all share," Max says. "When I am painting these men, looking into their eyes each night, I feel like I know them and a tremendous sadness arises when I realize that we will never see them again."

Max's remarkable legacy is the subject of a spectacular book, THE ART OF PETER MAX (Abrams, October 2002), the first book to take an in-depth look at his influence on culture in America and around the world.
