Bert Monroy - Hyper-Realist Artist

I consider myself a Hyper-realist artist. I love to paint. I use the word paint for lack of a better word. My medium is actually light. I have a passion for making things happen on the screen. Finding a new way of doing something and finding a new room in my imagination is what I love about the work.
--Bert Monroy

Bert Monroy was born and raised in New York City where he spent 20 years in the advertising industry as an art director and creative director for various agencies as well as his own.

Upon discovering computers with the introduction of the Macintosh 128 in 1984, he embarked on a new digital career. He embraced the computer as an artistic medium and is considered one of the pioneers of digital art. Bert's work has been seen in every major trade publication of the computer industry. His work has also been featured in scores of books which include Making Art on a Macintosh, The Photoshop WOW Book, The Illustrator WOW Book, The Art of Digital Painting, The Grey Book and The Photoshop A to Z in Japan.

His work has also been used to introduce many software products such as Photoshop, VideoWorks (predecessor to Director), PixelPaint, SoundCap and ImageStudio.

Bert was a founding partner in the New York firm Incredible Interactivity that was responsible for interactive multimedia presentations as early as 1986 before the terms had been coined. Presentations were created for such clients as General Motors, American Express and Knoll International.

Bert co-authored The Official Adobe Photoshop Handbook, which was the first book on Photoshop and the only one for almost two years. It won various awards. He also co-authored Adobe Photoshop: A Visual Guide to the Mac which was published in 14 languages, Photoshop 4, published in Japan by Agosto and BNN, and Photoshop Channel CHOPS, co-authored with David Biedny and Nathan Moody, which concentrates on the most advanced features of the program not covered anywhere else. In 2000 he released is first solo book from New Riders called Bert Monroy: Photorealistic Techniques with Photoshop and Illustrator. It concentrates on the techniques he has established over the years in the creation of his fine art works. It is available at Amazon.com. His second solo book Photoshop Studio with Bert Monroy, also from New Riders, is another compilation of his techniques specifically for Photoshop 7.0. January 2004 saw the introduction of Commercial Photoshop with Bert Monroy, also from New Riders. It is also a compilation of techniques but deals with Bert's commercial illustrations where photographs are sometimes used. This book deals with aspects of production that the two previous technique oriented books did not such as image retouching.

Bert is an accomplished teacher and lecturer who has served on the faculty of The School of Visual Arts (NYC), Center for Creative Imaging (ME), Dynamic Graphics Educational Foundation (IL), California College of Arts & Crafts (CA) and lectures at many other institutions and conferences around the world. He currently teaches at San Francisco State University. Bert is also a featured speaker at many world-wide conferences and is part of the Photoshop Dream Team of Photoshop World. Bert now lives in Berkeley, California. He continues to serve his installed base of clients which include Apple Computer, Adobe Systems, Pioneer Electronics, Fujitsu, SONY, AT&T, Chevron and American Express. Bert has also done a considerable amount of film work for Industrial Light & Magic, Pacific Data Images and R/Greenberg Assoc.

Since May of 2001, Bert has been a regular guest on the TechTV channel show The Screen Savers. He appears every month to share tips and techniques.

Bert Monroy Books

Commercial Photoshop with Bert Monroy

Bert combines years of experience and a detailed approach to make images that astonish people when they realize what they are looking at. He shares that approach here with you. Seeing behind the curtain, however, makes the results no less astonishing.

Photoshop Studio with Bert Monroy

Whether you're a first time Photoshop user or an old pro, you'll find this book an important addition to your library. In addition, the casual user of Photoshop can look like a pro faster than imagined by employing the carefully outlined techniques explored and explained in this book.

Bert Monroy: Photorealistic Techniques with Photoshop and Illustrator

This book offers unique insight into how a master of the craft uses his tools. Monroy's techniques, culled from 20 years of digital image-making, demonstrate the breadth of 3-D photorealistic results that can be achieved using 2-D illustrative tools.

This oversize paperback features useful techniques from real-world projects. In many cases, we get to see the progress of an image, starting with the most basic elements: the sketch in Adobe Illustrator. From there, Monroy takes the Illustrator image into Photoshop for finishing.

This Weeks Guests - Hour 2

Ben Willmore - Digitalmastery

A senior engineer from NASA once said that this man gave the best technical seminar he ever attended. That same year a computer-phobic who had been struggling with Photoshop for years proclaimed that "He takes the Boogie Man out of Photoshop!" This seems to be Ben Willmore's special gift; he has an uncanny ability to connect with users of every level and mindset; whether it's first-timers taking their first sniff of Photoshop, or razor-sharp nerds and nerdettes who are on the fast track to technical illumination. The common echo that Ben leaves in his wake seems to be "Aha! I finally GET Photoshop!"

To date, Ben has personally taught over 30,000 Photoshop users on three continents. His descriptions of Curves and Channels are thought to be the best in the industry and his breakthrough teaching style of "not-just-how-but-why," has made him the in-house instructor of choice for companies such as Mercedes Benz, Adobe Systems, America Online, the U.S. Airforce, Lexis Nexis and Fisher-Price Toys. His award-winning, best-selling book, Adobe Photoshop Studio Techniques is said to be "Arguably, one of the best Photoshop books ever written." by Photoshop User's publisher, Jim Workman. He is co-author (with Jack Davis) of the just released "How to Wow: Photoshop for Photographers", creator of the best-selling Master Series videos, as well as a co-author of the How to Wow: Photoshop for Photography book.

He continues to be a featured speaker at publishing conferences and events worldwide, including Photoshop World, American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP), Professional Photographers of America (PPA) and the Royal Photographic Society of England. He's a member of the Dream Team for NAPP and writes for numerous digital imaging and photography publications, including a monthly column for Photoshop User magazine. In 2004 he was inducted into the Photoshop Hall of Fame at PhotoshopWorld. His reputation as the "expert's expert" prompted NAPP's president, Scott Kelby, to say, "When we get stuck, we call Ben!" His home office is perched at 8,000 ft. in the Colorado rockies, where he is often joined by a herd of elk and a lone coyote.

2004 Hands-on Seminars - Photoshop for Photographers

Finally...a Photoshop seminar designed just for photographers! Unlike most Photoshop seminars geared toward the graphic designer, Ben cuts away the fat and goes right to the heart of what is essential to working photographers. Ben has been helping photography professionals achieve a breakthrough understanding of Photoshop for over a decade. But the real advantage in attending Photoshop for Photographers is Ben's signature style of teaching--focusing not just on the "how," but the "why."
