This Weeks Guests - Hour 1Czeslaw Jan Grycz - CEO and Publisher - Octavo
Introduced shortly after the invention of printing from movable type, the octavo was the first format developed specifically for creating portable, mass-produced, low-cost books. At the same time, Renaissance thinkers believed they could elevate the individual dignity and worth of great numbers of people by disseminating the long-hidden ideas of classical Greek authors. The work of these thinkers and printers changed the world forever: They brought the great ideas of the past to light in the present; and, in doing so, inspired innovation and growth in virtually every area of human knowledge and experience. Today, Octavo exists to serve the same ideal. Our purpose is to use the best in advanced technology to uncover and enhance the seminal ideas of the past in ways that will provide inspiration for the present and future. Through our proprietary digital imaging technologies, archiving services, and published editions, Octavo facilitates preservation and enables discovery for a wide range of audiences. Octavo Case StudiesBodleian Library, Oxford, UKSince mid-January 2004, Octavo has been the guest of the Imaging Services Department of Oxford University's Bodleian Library. By Thanksgiving, Octavo had digitized slightly over 14,000 pages of rare and valuable works for the Bodleian, systematically capturing high-resolution images of entire books and collections. Systematic digitization is not easily undertaken by library imaging departments who are typically dealing with high volumes of long-term individual page imaging work orders. Our collaboration has proven congenial and productive - not only has Octavo digitized numerous books of outstanding quality and importance, but our work with the Bodleian staff has also allowed us to better understand the potential utility of our workflow software for improving the efficiency of on-demand digitization efforts.
British Library, London, UKIn 2003, Octavo launched an ambitious digitization project under the guidance of the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C. The goal of the project is to digitize the entire corpus, wherever they are known to exist, of Quarto editions of William Shakespeare's plays published before 1641. Quarto editions of Shakespeare's plays are housed in the collections of at least five leading libraries in the UK and the US. Since these works need to be digitized on site, the effort involves transporting sensitive camera and computer equipment, installing and calibrating the systems, and carefully staging and imaging the original works. Digitization of the 119 Quarto editions in the collection of the British Library was completed early in 2004. The British Library has mounted an impressive online exhibit of these works on its site even as Octavo continues to assemble the complete collection from all the participating libraries in the project. Also, Octavo will be making available for purchase both electronic and printed editions of the individual digitized plays. From these sales, a portion of all Octavo revenues will be returned as royalties to the participating libraries. The Getty Research Library, Los Angeles, CAAs an architect, printmaker, and publisher in eighteenth-century Rome, Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-78) brought together the emerging disciplines of architecture, art history, and archaeology. With a focus on one of the most important graphic artists in the history of art, a digital project is being undertaken by Octavo to present the Getty Research Library's notable collections of Piranesi's printed works. The Getty Research Institute's copies of Piranesi's works were commissioned from the print shop in the late eighteenth century by Swedish King Gustav III, one of Piranesi's notable patrons, for the king's Roman ambassador. The Octavo publication will reproduce the artist's works in high-quality surrogates which reveal important details of etching technique, ink, and paper to scholars and connoisseurs. The project commences with his most important works, the treatise Della Magnficenza ed Architettura de' Romani (1761) which focuses on Piranesi's lifelong obsession, the magnificent architecture of the ancient city of Rome, and the suite of Roman city-views Vedute de Roma, [c.1780s]. These are both foundational works in the history of art that convey Piranesi's dual contributions to printmaking and polemics. http://www.octavo.comThis Weeks Guests - Hour 2Dawn Miceli & Drew Domkus - The Dawn and Drew Show
New York TimesThe unscripted "Dawn and Drew Show," one of the most popular podcasts so far, is recorded in the living room of Ms. Miceli, an artist, and Mr. Domkus, who provides technical support for an office building in nearby Milwaukee. They play off each other like Abbott and Costello, with Mr. Domkus as the straight man and Ms. Miceli as the joker, continually cracking jokes and making off-the-wall comments (and sometimes venturing into sexual subject matter). The Boston GlobeGarfield loves loading up his iPod, before taking a long walk around Jamaica Pond, with the latest edition of ''The Dawn and Drew Show," the real-life and often off-color bantering of a husband and wife in rural Wisconsin. He also likes downloading one of the few mass-market shows now being podcast, ''Morning Stories" on Boston's WGBH-FM public radio station.NewsweekIn his self-reported list alone, there are about 2,000 podcasts, including everything from down-home talk shows like the husband-and-wife bantering on "The Dawn and Drew Show" in Wayne, Wis., to MP3 bloggers like Roger McGuinn, the former Byrds frontman, who beams rare old-timey tunes to his subscribers ("It's been very gratifying," he tells NEWSWEEK of the feedback he's gotten). It's pirate radio writ large and legal. The GuardianThe available feeds range from Skinny Bones on Air, a podcast featuring "the experiences gained from writing, directing and editing an independent feature film", to the increasingly infamous Dawn and Drew show, "a husband and wife podcasting duo coming to you from the town of Wayne, Wisconsin". http://www.dawnanddrew.comSam's Cool Mac Pick's - Feb 19th - 2005Griffin Technology's LapelMic

Writing news, spots, promos and interstitials also fits somewhere in his repertoire. And he runs a mean radio board for in studio as well as remote broadcasts.
