Inside Mac - January 31st 2004

This Weeks Guests

Gary E. Pond - Porter Case

Porter Case was incorporated in 1990. The original idea came from my Dad who was a frequent traveler. He often needed a cart, but tended to leave it at home because it was a pain to travel with. At the other end of a trip he was usually mad because he could have used the cart.

My mother suggested that my Dad and I get together to work on that idea. I originally made a wood and card board model that my Dad laughed at. I said.........so you make one. I laughed at his, but we were getting close. The third model that I made combined our ideas and we took it to a patent attorney, who said, "I think you may have something there."

Since that time we have refined the idea into 3 patents, several sizes and numerous models plus accessories.

The basic engineering design has been a light weight airline hard side carryon size case with a built in CART that will carry 200 pounds of other baggage on top.

No case product can be all things to all people. We have thus far elected to specialize as a light weight carryon and not be a heavier shipping case. Our cases range in weight from 12 - 14 pounds while a shipping style case may weight 25 - 30 pounds.

In the beginning we thought we were luggage business and attended the trade shows related to the Luggage Industry. Since that time, we realized that our cases were being used by the professional traveler and that they were looking for cases that would help them to protect, carry, and organize their delicate expensive items. They wanted function and did not mind paying a little more for it.

A Porter Case allows professional speakers/presenters, photographers, executives, and those in other niche markets to roll "on board" their most delicate important items, while they check the rest. Then, before and after the trip, our patented CART feature is there to help them roll it all away.

Over the years Porter Case has grow from a maker of cases to a company that offers "Traveler Solutions" to people who are always on the go. Our Frequent Traveler users love their Porter Case!

I am told that our customers fell like they are part of a unique club. That they can never pass another Porter Case user without giving them a knowing smile. Often they stop and tell each other quick stories about their cases.

Porter Case has made travel life a lot more convenient. Those who have found us say they will never travel without a Porter Case again!

Because of our new 40% lower pricing, we are beginning to see our sales sky rocket. Now most any traveler can afford a Porter Case.

Porter Case is engineered as a hard sided wheeled carry-on that easily rolls down the aisle of an airplane and will fit under most seats and/or overhead compartments. Protect your most important and delicate valuables by rolling them on board. After the flight, see the real magic of Porter Case. Pull two pins and a heavy duty luggage carrier instantly appears to carry those extra suitcases, boxes, sales materials. Even skis or golf clubs! No more looking for a Skycap, airport cart rental, or Bellman. No more tipping. Porter Case is an invisible carrier, a protective carry-on, even a seat. It works equally well with trains, planes, ships or autos. With Porter Case your cart is always there. . . when you need it.

Deluxe Divider Case is the newest case in the Porter Case line. We have combined the Divider Case with the Computercase. It is a fully lined case. In the lid, it features a three section briefcase style accordion portfolio lid with pockets and pouches for discs, filters, pens, etc. The bottom has adjustable high density foam padded dividers to protect expensive camera equipment. Many customers are using the Deluxe Divider Case to customize the interior for their presentation equipment, their digital camera equipment, or to use as a mobile office. For more detailed descriptions, please refer to the Divider Case and Computercase.

Dave Cross - National Association of Photoshop Professionals (NAPP)

Dave Cross is the Senior Developer, Education & Curriculum for the National Association of Photoshop Professionals (NAPP), a contributing writer to Photoshop User magazine and co-author of Photoshop 7 Trade Secrets and Photoshop 7 & Illustrator 10: Create Great Advanced Graphics. Dave is a lead instructor for the Photoshop Seminar Tour, is on the Instructor "Dream Team" for PhotoshopWorld and is featured on various instructional videos and DVDs. Prior to joining NAPP, Dave ran his own consulting and training business in Ottawa, Canada, teaching thousands of students across North America.

The National Association of Photoshop Professionals (NAPP) is a dynamic trade association and the world's leading resource for Adobe(R) Photoshop(R) education, training, and news. It is led by a world-class team of Photoshop experts, authors, consultants, trainers, and educators whose focus is to ensure that NAPP members stay on the cutting edge of Adobe Photoshop techniques and ahead of their competition.

The idea for forming NAPP grew out of feedback received by instructors on the Adobe Photoshop Seminar Tour (which we founded in 1993). Students asked for direction on continuing education but at that time there was no central resource for Photoshop instruction. It became apparent that there was a tremendous need for this type of association, and with the urging and input of industry leaders, the groudwork was developed for what would become NAPP.

With Adobe System's help, NAPP made its debut at Seybold New York in April of 1998, along with the premiere of the first issue of Photoshop User magazine. The organization was met with an immediate flood of support. Within just a few months NAPP had already enrolled thousands of members and quickly grew beyond the borders of the U.S. to become a truly international organization that now has members in 107 countries around the world.

In 2003 NAPP became the first educational association of its kind to become nationally accredited. Because of this nationally recognized ACCET accreditation, NAPP is now able to provide continuing education credits to students who attend NAPP produced training events.

Today NAPP maintains its focus on its members so that it can continue to address the techniques, issues, and concerns that Photoshop users share. It is this relationship that has propelled NAPP to become one of the largest, most respected organizations of its kind, and the worldwide central resource for Adobe Photoshop training and education and news.
