Dr. Mac's OS X Tip-of-the-Day

Dr. Mac - Short and Sweet Deep Sleep.

By Bob LeVitus

A patient named Martin sent in this short and sweet tip, which, believe it or not, I didn't know before. It puts your Mac into the deepest sleep possible instantly, with no fan noise, monitor hum, or disk chatter. Martin says:

> My favourite shortcut is command + option + eject which
> puts the Mac into the sleep mode with no fan noise or
> hardware activity.

And this technique is better than the usual way 'cause it's quieter. If I choose Sleep from the Apple menu, I still hear the fan inside my G4 QuickSilver and the hum of spinning disks. When I use Martin's method, both sounds cease almost instantly.

For those of you who crave total silence at your desk every so often, Command-Option-Eject is just the ticket. Phone ringing? Command-Option-Eject and you'll hear every word. Wife calling from the next room? Command-Option-Eject and you'll hear every word. Sensitive to fan whine? You know just what to do now.

As far as I can tell, nothing is quieter than Command-Option-Eject except, perhaps, Shut Down.

Thank you so much, Martin! You're the MAN!
