Did you know there's a bona fide headshrinker inside your Mac? There is if you're running Mac OS X. Her name is Eliza and while she's not quite as smart as some psychiatrists I've known, she's more fun and a whole lot cheaper. To have your own head shrunk, launch Terminal.app, type "emacs" at the prompt (without the quotes, of course) then press Enter/Return. The Unix text editor known as EMACS will load; hold down the Shift key and then press the Esc key. Type "xdoctor" (again, without the quotes), and press Enter/Return. Dr. Eliza should ask you a question now. Type a response, then press Enter/Return twice. The doctor will ask another question. Type a response, then press Enter/Return twice. And so on until you're sick of her. When you are, Control-X, Control-C will quit the emacs editor. I know. It's kind of a lame SMT (Stupid Mac Trick). And if you've seen the Eliza program before, (she's been around almost as long as the Adventure game -- "You are standing on a path..."), you're sure to be underwhelmed. While she may be lame, I wanted y'all to know she was there. One never knows when a free shrink will come in handy. Feel free to tell her I sent you...To discuss this tip (or anything you like) in Dr. Mac's OSXFAQ Forum, click here: http://forums.osxfaq.com/viewtopic.php?t=3388Bob LeVitus is a leading authority on Mac OS and the author of 39 books, including Mac OS X For Dummies and The Little iTunes Book.
