Dr. Mac's OS X Tip-of-the-Day

Dr Mac's Freely Distributed Jaguar Extra.

By BOB LEVITUS

There is one last thing.... I forgot to mention something important and good-to-know in Monday's tip about the Get Info command. That is - the old way - with a single Info window that changes as you change your selection - is still available. Just press Command - Option - I or press Option when you pull down the File menu and you'll notice that Get Info changes into Show Inspector when you do.

Thanks to reader Andreas N. for pointing out my silly omission.

And now, while we've traditionally used Friday as a Freeware celebration, I'm going to open things up a little and allow shareware to be included as well. So hereafter, my Friday edition will be known as, "Freely-Distributed-Software Friday" instead of "Freeware Friday."

And, in honor of yesterday's tip, which showed you a free way to do the same thing, today's Freely-Distributed-Software Friday pick is xBack, from Gideon Softwarks. It lets you run screen savers as your desktop, but unlike the Terminal trick, you can merely quit the program when you get sick of it. Very clever. It's honorware for $12 and worth it.
