OSXFAQ - Mac OS X System Tips 
Command-Shift-4... Not your fathers screen shot any more!!
In Jaguar you can use the user selectable mode (command-shift-4) to do your screen shots.
You use the space bar to toggle between the regular (+) selection mode and the new mode to capture
just a single window, the Dock or the menu bar (how cool is that !!)
Your cursor will change to a camera icon when you have invoked this new mode and as you move your mouse
over different areas of your desktop the target aera is highlighted.
