Drive 10


What is the difference between Drive 10 and TechTool Pro?

Drive 10 is a drive diagnostic and repair utility for hard drives only. It does not contain the other hardware and software features of TechTool Pro such as RAM tests, data recovery, optimization, etc. At this time TechTool Pro is a much more full featured program. It will be some time before there is a Mac OS X native version of TechTool Pro. It will probably be rolled into a major upgrade because many things will have to change. We are offering Drive 10 as an interim program for those who want to be able to check their drives without rebooting in Mac OS 9.x.

TechTool Pro 3 requires booting under Mac OS 9.x or below (such as directly from the TechTool Pro CD) and will not run in Classic Mode under Mac OS X. TechTool Pro 3.0.5 or later can then test the computer and attached drives, including those with Mac OS X installed. It can repair and optimize drives with Mac OS X installed on them.

Drive 10 requires booting under Mac OS X. It can then check attached drives for problems, including those with Mac OS 9.x or below on them.

I have updated my copy of Drive 10 using the free updater. Can I make my own bootable Drive 10 CD so that I can repair my normal Mac OS X startup drive?

Micromat always make the updates available free from our Downloads section. As an owner of Drive 10 you may purchase the latest Drive 10 CD at any time for a small fee. It is available from Micromat Sales at 800-829-6227 or 707-566-3831.

If you own version 1.0.2 or greater of the Drive 10 CD, you can create a CD with the updated version. Note that this is an involved process and that you should be fairly comfortable with Mac OS X before attempting it.

  1. Use Disk Copy under Mac OS X and select New Image from Device under the Image menu.
  2. Insert your Drive 10 CD and select the Drive 10 CD-ROM from the Device Selector window. Then click on the Image button.
  3. When the Image Device window appears give the image a name. We suggest naming it "Drive 10 CD.dmg". Then save the file to the desktop. Set the Image format as read/write so that you can copy the updated Drive 10 application to the image.
  4. Click the Image button in the Image Device window. Disk Copy will create an exact copy of the Drive 10 CD to a device copy image that is read/write. This routine may take some time since the CD is about 650 MB in size.
  5. Once the imaging of the Drive 10 CD is complete, the device copy image will appear on the Desktop (as specified from Disk Copy). Double-clicking on the Drive 10.dmg file will mount the Drive 10 CD image on the desktop.
  6. From here Drive 10 will need to be updated in two spots on the CD-ROM image. The first one will be in the initial window (root directory) and the other (very important) in the Applications folder of the CD.
  7. We recommend that you delete the Drive 10 application from the root directory of the CD image and copy the updated version of the application from your hard drive to that location. You should then empty the Trash to permanently remove the old Drive 10 application from the CD image.
  8. Now you will need to scroll in the Drive 10 CD image to the folder called Applications. Inside this folder is another Drive 10 application which is the application that is used when you boot from the Drive 10 CD. You should copy this Drive 10 application to the desktop.
  9. Once the old Drive 10 application is copied to the desktop from the Applications folder on the CD, you should copy the updated version of the Drive 10 application into the Applications folder. Now it gets a little tricky.
  10. Inside the old Drive 10 application is a file called, KeyFile. You will need to open the application package by selecting the old Drive 10 application while holding down the Control key. This will present you with a popup menu. In the popup menu you should select Show Package Contents.
  11. After selecting Show Package Contents, a folder will appear called, Drive 10. Inside this folder you will need to navigate to /Contents/Resources
  12. Inside the Resources folder of the application package resides the KeyFile that you will need to copy from the older version of Drive 10 to the newer version of Drive 10 that was placed in the Applications folder of the CD. Use the same procedure as above to open the application package for the new version of the Drive 10 application. Once you have copied the KeyFile you can delete the old version of Drive 10 from the desktop.
  13. You can now proceed to burn this device copy image of Drive 10 to CD using either Disk Copy or Toast Titanium.

When I launch Drive 10 I just get the "spinning beach ball" as the program tries to update the volume list. What should I do?

Drive 10 might have encountered a device that is causing a problem. Try disconnecting all third party peripherals that you can. This includes USB hubs. Use the original Apple keyboard and mouse.

Drive 10 asks for an administrator password when I launch it. What do I need to enter?

In order to run Drive 10 you must have administrator privileges. Drive 10 verifies this by requiring that you enter an administrator password. In most cases this is the password you chose when you first installed Mac OS X.

Drive 10 does not allow me to select all the tests for my drive. Why not?

Drive 10 has full support from the Unit Ready to the Spare Sector tests for ATA and FireWire hard drives only. Hard drives that are connected via USB or SCSI do not support these tests.

Drive 10 does not allow me to select the Read/Write tests. Why not?

It is possible the privileges for the drive are set to Read Only. If this is the case, change them to Read/Write. You can check and change the privileges via the Show-Info window.

When I launch Drive 10 it quits, indicating that it cannot authenticate. What is wrong?

Try moving Drive 10 to the root level of the hard drive. It may be in a folder whose name contains an illegal Unix character (such as the italicized "f"). The system will not be able to access such a folder to authenticate the Drive 10 installation.

Can I use Drive 10 to check and repair my RAID array?

Drive 10 has not been tested for compatibility with RAID arrays. Consequently we cannot recommend it for use on them.
