How do I activate sshd (secure shell daemon)?

Install the OpenSSH package.

How do I keep tabs on my system activity?

Given that you don't normally increase system security by running sendmail, you'd be surprised at how much administrative and security information will be emailed to you in real-time, daily, weekly, and monthly, if you follow these steps:

  1. turn on sendmail, as described in Mail Administration
  2. create a /private/var/root/.forward file containing your email address, ie:

    root# echo 'mark@zieg.com' > /private/var/root/.forward

Is a portscanner available?

There is now!

If you think it is of interest you may add a link to http://www.sheller.org/nmap/.

I posted directions of how to get NMAP to compile under MacOS X. NMAP is a great port scanner from the Linux community. Interesting to see for yourself what services are running on the Mac.

I will update the page as time permits, but there is enough there now to get people going.
