This week's tips are about Apple's TextEdit - a very capable mini word processor. It includes more features than are apparent at first glance. Many of these features are provided by OS X core technologies and are applicable to other Cocoa based applications. Note: make sure that the current document is Rich Text format (menu item Format::Make Rich Text). Take advantage of the Recently Used Fonts menu. Select menu item Format::Font::Show fonts. In the Font window select Recently Used from Collections, and click on any of the fonts (typeface, style, size, and colour combination) listed. Use this technique to select a new current font, or to change the font for a selection.
While editing a document with say five different fonts, you'll find it much quicker to click the font from Recently Used than select from the All Fonts collection. Of course, you can add the currently selected font to Favourites too:
To delete a font from Favourites simply select it and drag from the Font window. If you do not see the Collections pane, make the Fonts window bigger. Another cool feature of Fonts, like all system services, is that it works across applications. Fire up Apple's Mail and select menu item Format::Show Fonts. You'll see the same Collections, including the same Recently Used and Favourite fonts. Add you own collections by hitting the '+' button. Enjoy !! :-) Panther 10.3.6 To discuss this tip in the OSXFAQ Mac OS X Tip-of-the-Day Forum, click here: http://forums.osxfaq.com/viewforum.php?f=100E-mail your comments or suggestions to webmaster@osxfaq.com
