System Tricks - Create Global Startup Items
By Adrian Mayo - Editor - OSXFAQ
Startup Items are applications that start automatically when you log in
to your account. A Startup Item is added using System Preferences,
pane Accounts, tab Startup Items. This information is written to the
preference file loginwindow.plist in folder Library:Preferences in your
home folder.
Define global Startup Items that apply to all user accounts. Create a
global loginwindow.plist file in folder Library:Preferences at the root
of the system drive. The easiest method is to simply copy your own
loginwindow.plist to the system one, which by default does not exist.
You must be an administrator to do this.
Next, make the file world-readable. Select it and hit Command-I (Get
Info). In the Get Info window click the lock to authenticate and set
Others to Read Only.
Each Startup Item you had set for your own account will now be applied
to all users, existing and new alike. User-specific Startup Items will
continue to work too.
So far this is rather primitive as it is a direct copy of your own
Startup Items. Create different global Startup Items. First save your
own by dragging loginwindow.plist to the desktop. Next use System
Preferences to define the desired global set, save and then do the file
copy and permissions change as above. Finally, drag the saved
loginwindow.plist from the desktop back to restore your original
Startup Items.
Check the permissions of the file, and make sure Others have Read Only
access.
If you wish to change the global Startup Items in the future this
method can be rather tedious. Tuesday's tip will show you how to
maintain the global set in a tidier manner.
Enjoy !! :-)
