Desktop Deeds - Desktop Movies

By Adrian Mayo - Editor - OSXFAQ

If you are so successful in managing your desktop space that you can actually see it, try changing your desktop (static) picture to a moving picture. The following Terminal trick will set the current screen saver to run as the desktop background.

All on one line:

$/System/Library/Frameworks/screensaver.framework/Resources/screensaverEngine.app/Contents/MacOS/screensaverEngine -background &

[1] 3944

Note the number you get back, in my case 3944. This is the process number and is used to stop the desktop screen saver with:

$ kill 3944
[1]+ Terminated
/System/Library/Frameworks/screensaver.framework/Resources/screensaverEngine.app/Contents/MacOS/screensaverEngine -background

Unfortunately, hot keys like tabbed switching stop working after the desktop screen saver has been activated. To regain them, stop the desktop screen saver, type 'killall Dock' in the Terminal, then start and stop the real screen saver. (Don't ask me why or how I found that out, and there might be a better way!)

If you ever take screen shots, a handy tip is to set the desktop to a solid white colour so it blends with the (presumable white) web page, and you get the nice drop shadows too.

Enjoy !! :-)
