Desktop Deeds - Multiple Desktops

By Adrian Mayo - Editor - OSXFAQ

If you can't have multiple monitors, the next best thing is multiple desktops. This software feature allows you to set up a number of virtual desktops. You can open different window sets on each desktop and easily flip between desktops.

These are some of the freeware and shareware utilities that provide multiple desktops.

Desktop Manager: (Free)

Quote:

"Desktop Manager is a free virtual desktop manager that places an unobtrusive desktop pager in the menubar and allows fast switching of desktops either with hotkeys or by clicking in the pager. It is designed to be fast, lightweight, and Just Work. It is released under the GNU General Public License."

VirtualDesktop: ($40)

Quote:

"CodeTek VirtualDesktop provides you with the capability to switch between desktops on your monitor as though you had separate monitors. CodeTek Virtual Desktop provides a GUI interface that contains your desktops arranged in a grid. Each desktop on the pager is a unique environment where you can accomplish your work. Windows can be moved between desktops simply by dragging them between desktops on the pager.

The unregistered version of CodeTek VirtualDesktop limits you to only 2 fully functional desktops."

Virtual Screens: (free)

http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/14033

Quote:

"VirtualScreens is a small app that resides in the System Status Bar (the rightmost part of the menu bar) of Mac OS X (Jaguar and Panther). It enables unilimited "virtual screens". A virtual screen is simply a user-defined set of active (visible) applications. When the user changes the virtual screen, the applications that were visible are hidden, and the hidden applications that belong to the new virtual screen are shown. In this way, you can reduce the cluttering on your screen and organize the running applications in the way that's most convenient to you."

Space: (free)

Quote:

"Space.app provides "virtual workspaces" to help you to organize your use of the desktop. Space.app is provided free of charge for individual and commercial use under the QPL (version 1.0) and may be redistributed according to the terms of that license."

Enjoy !! :-)
