OSXFAQ Mac OS X Tip-of-the-Day
Trouble-Shooting III (Hardware) - System Disc Repair
By Adrian Mayo - Editor - OSXFAQ
Verify or repair the system disc. A 'live' system disc (the one you
booted from) cannot be verified or repaired using Disk Utility. You
must boot using another system to repair it. For example, use the
Panther install discs that came with your Mac, boot from these, and
select Disk Utility from the menu instead of going ahead with the
install.
If the disc cannot be repaired try a commercial disc repair program.
These usually do a more thorough job of verification and repair.
The most popular are Drive 10 from MicroMat:
http://www.micromat.com/drive_10/drive_10_introduction.html
and DiskWarrior from ALSOFT.
http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/index.html
Create an 'eDrive' in case you cannot boot from the system drive. This
is a feature of TechTool Pro 4 from MicroMat:
http://www.micromat.com/tt_pro_4/tt_pro_4.html
Quote:
"The eDrive feature allows you to create an invisible emergency volume
from your existing drive. This new partition is created WITHOUT the
need to reformat your current drive and allows you to store a copy of
your system and a copy of TechTool Pro. If you ever have trouble with
your main drive, simply restart your computer and your system will
start from your Emergency Drive giving you immediate access to the
utilities you'll need to resurrect your main drive. Now there's no more
need for a bootable CD or ancillary hard drive for system drive repair
or maintenance."
Enjoy !! :-)
