Here are some tips focusing on Apple's Spotlight, introduced in Mac OS 10.4 Tiger. (Yes, I avoided saying 'puts the spotlight on Spotlight'. Oh, I just did!) We probably all know of the Command-Space key combination that brings up the one-line window in which to enter a Spotlight search term. Pressing Option-Command-Space brings up the larger results window instead. There are other ways to enter a search term that don't involve typing it. Highlight a term in a Cocoa application and Control-click it to bring up a contextual menu from where you can Search in Spotlight. (Or simply press Command-Shift-F in Text Edit.)
To search for files based on many criteria: filename, contents, metadata, bring up the Finder's search facility by typing Command-F.
Tomorrow's tip looks at these Finder-based searches. Enjoy! :- ) Tiger 10.4.4 Discuss this tip in the OSXFAQ Mac OS X Tip-of-the-Day Forum E-mail your comments or suggestions to webmaster@osxfaq.com
