A very easy way to email a document as an attachment is to drag the document from the Finder and drop it into the email. You can either drop the document onto an existing email or onto the Mail.app icon in the Dock to start a new email. This method is usually easier than clicking 'Attach' and navigating the resulting dialogue to find the document in question. If the document is an image, it'll be displayed 'in line'. If you'd prefer to see it as an icon, right- or Control-click the picture and select 'View as Icon'. (This won't affect the way the recipient of the email sees it.) Mail includes a control to adjust down the size of an image sent as an attachment - very useful to scale down unnecessarily big attachments:
If you have to mail a document to someone with a more challenged operating system, use the long-hand "clicking 'Attach'" method and check the 'Send Friendly' box.
